Welcome to Morgannwg Local Medical Committee

Morgannwg Local Medical Committee (LMC) is a body of General Practitioners who are elected by their peers to represent the views of General Practice in the Bridgend, Neath Port Talbot and Swansea areas.

The LMC has a number of key roles on behalf of GPs and Practices:
• The GMS Contract – the LMC is a statutory committee and the Local Health Board (the holder of the General Medical Services Contract for each Practice) must consult with the LMC on matters relating to GMS and the GMS Contract. The LMC is also involved in the Complaints, Poor Performance and Disciplinary procedures to support GPs and to ensure that the process is fair for all concerned.
• Advice to GPs in the area – the LMC provides advice to Practices on clinical and non clinical issues (including pastoral support to Practices in the event of professional and personal problems).
• Representation of GPs in its area – the LMC represents the views of GPs on many local groups and bodies (NHS and non-NHS) including liaison with other professional groups (e.g. Consultants, Nurses, Allied Health Professionals, Social Workers, CHCs, AMs and MPs). Issues that are high on the LMC agenda include inappropriate transfer of work from secondary to primary care; workload; unnecessary paperwork; ensuring adequate resources for Enhanced Services; ethical problems and maintaining the standing of General Practice with the media and the public.

Morgannwg LMC elects its 24 GP members every three years and it also co-opts Members (including Practice Managers, GP Registrars, Public Health Doctors and others as necessary) on a yearly basis.

Morgannwg LMC has an Executive consisting of the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Secretary and the three Liaison Officers.

LMC Officers and Members sit on a number of groups, bodies and other committees in order to fulfil the functions listed above

Morgannwg LMC meets on the 2nd Tuesday of alternate months (with an Executive meeting between full LMC meetings) and all GPs from the LMC area are welcome to attend as observers at these meetings. Submission of items and issues for consideration at LMC Meetings are always welcomed

The LMC is funded via a Statutory Levy that is payable by all Practices. The LMC also contributes to the wider activities of the General Practitioners Committee for Wales and for the UK who are responsible for negotiating contractual matters with the relevant governments) and it raises this contribution from constituent Practices via a Voluntary Levy. Currently, all Practices who are not directly managed by LHBs have signed a mandate for the LMC to collect this Voluntary Levy on an annual basis.
